A Sicilian Jewel: Our New Opening in Noto

Rocco Forte Hotels

In an unspoilt, sunny corner of southeastern Sicily, Noto is a Baroque masterpiece. Framed by rolling hills and the blue Mediterranean, this UNESCO World Heritage Town was rebuilt in radiant style after the devastating earthquake of 1693. Honey-hued palazzi and ornate churches now rise from the landscape like echoes of a bygone era. In this captivating setting, Rocco Forte Hotels will unveil Palazzo Castelluccio, a meticulously restored 18th-century residence that offers an intimate connection to Sicily’s golden age.

Originally built in 1782 by the influential Marquis di Lorenzo del Castelluccio, it spans over 100 rooms and 50,000 square feet – one of the largest noble residences in the Val di Noto. Constructed from the local limestone that defines the region, the palazzo’s façade, like much of Noto, takes on a warm golden tone in the Sicilian sunshine.  Its neoclassical design, a departure from Noto’s dominant Baroque style, lends the palazzo a unique charm that harmonises with the town’s historical narrative.

Inside, Palazzo Castelluccio’s soul is revealed. Grand yet intimate, the palazzo was once a centre of aristocratic life. Walls draped in shimmering blue silk, ornately painted ceilings, trompe l’oeil walls, and original ceramic floors from Caltagirone, each beautifully preserved room no doubt played host to lively gatherings.

Now, under the careful vision of Olga Polizzi, Director of Design at Rocco Forte Hotels, alongside designers Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen, Palazzo Castelluccio will be reimagined as a 31-room residence. This transformation will carefully preserve its historic essence while adding contemporary touches. “Each room will blend inherited charm and contemporary luxury to evoke the same timeless grandeur that fills the rest of the Palazzo,” shares Polizzi.

Beyond its elegant interiors, the charm of Palazzo Castelluccio extends to its lush garden, where palm trees and vibrant bougainvillaea frame spaces perfect for unwinding on Sicilian summer afternoons. The palazzo will also feature a restaurant, bar, garden lounge, meeting and event spaces, as well as a spa and gym, offering guests an array of experiences.

Stepping out from Palazzo Castelluccio, Noto’s cobblestone streets lead you through a town renowned as “The Capital of Baroque." A short stroll brings you to the majestic Cathedral of San Nicolò, which dominates the skyline, while nearby, Palazzo Ducezio with its Hall of Mirrors, and the Church of San Domenico highlight Noto’s architectural splendour. The town's vibrant character unfolds through events such as the Infiorata, where streets are blanketed with colourful floral carpets each spring. Local markets brim with citrus fruits, almonds, and olives, while just beyond, Lido di Noto offers sandy shores and turquoise waters, inviting you to while away the day by the Mediterranean.

Palazzo Castelluccio is set to open in 2026 and joins two existing properties in Sicily, Villa Igiea, Palermo, and Verdura Resort, Sciacca.
