Rishi Prasad - The Museums and Art of London

Learning through London

As a born-and-bred Londoner, the city still surprises me. I’m always exploring—whether it’s a new exhibition or reading on the train. We meet new people daily, often with just minutes to build a connection. There’s an art to that.

RFH Brown's Hotel London Guides The British Museum

Travel the world at the British Museum

There is always something great to see at the British Museum. I’ve visited since I was a kid, and I’ve connected with it more the older I’ve got. It’s one of the world’s oldest museums and I’ve always felt a thrill walking into its big open hall. It just has everything - two million years of culture. It’s great that it’s free to visit. A behind-the-scenes tour here is well recommended.

RFH Brown's Hotel London Guides Tate Modern

Be inspired at Tate Modern

The Tate Modern consistently puts on shows that are diverse and inspirational, so it’s understandably popular. It tends to get busier as the day progresses, so generally, the earlier you go, the better. An exhibition I’m looking forward to this year is Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind, which is going to be the largest showcase of Yoko Ono’s work, spanning seven decades of her life, art, and activism.

Benjamin Franklin House

Another lesser-known museum is Benjamin Franklin House, near Trafalgar Square. A visit will transport you back to the 1700s when Franklin lived here for 16 years. As the world’s last remaining home of one of America’s beloved Founding Fathers, it’s worth a visit. Most of us know him for being the face of the $100 bill but Franklin was responsible for many inventions, such as bifocals, and some even say he invented electricity in America.

Explore the Victoria & Albert collections

I’m a big fan of the V&A. NAOMI is going to be huge this summer - a show exploring Naomi Campbell’s forty-year career in fashion, from being discovered while window shopping in Covent Garden as a teenager to breaking barriers as the first Black model on the cover of many magazines. Whatever time of year you visit, there will be something for you, and Brown’s guests often enjoy exclusive access through our partnerships with the museum. The building itself is a must-see.

Sir John Soane’s Museum

Sir John Soane’s Museum is one of the most overlooked. Sir John was one of the greatest English architects, responsible for many impressive buildings in London, including the Bank of England. The museum, in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, was once the architect’s home - one of his many designs - and remains the same today as the day he died. It has late evening openings, where visitors can wander the corridors after hours and see his collection of works by Canaletto, Turner and Hogarth.

Browse the galleries

We are lucky to have so many galleries on our doorstep – our hotel map has a section entirely devoted to them. The Royal Academy puts on remarkable exhibitions and promotes the practice of art in inclusive ways, and its setting in Picadilly’s Burlington House is stunning. But don’t underestimate Mayfair’s smaller boutiques and galleries, with little, easy-to-miss shop fronts. These places offer more intimate exhibitions and a more bespoke experience of collecting and appreciating art. .
