“My twin passions are hospitality and food. Human connections are made around a table, enjoying a moment together."

My Favourites:

“When it comes to my restaurant recommendations, the key is finding the right for each guest’s circumstances, whether a formal dinner or an authentic Brussels experience. I love exploring and trying different restaurants throughout the city, so I can share my findings with our guests.”

Where should you eat in Brussels?

Let’s imagine I had a concierge friend from London or Munich coming to Brussels to stay and I wanted to show them classic Belgian cuisine. The two restaurants that instantly come to mind would be Lola at Place du Grand Sablon and Odette en Ville. I think at Odette I’d go for the solettes meunière with spinach and mashed potatoes, whilst at Lola’s maybe something from their classic Belgian menu like pearly cod with mousseline sauce and hand-peeled grey shrimps.

If you want that Belgian classic moules-frites, I think Aux Armes de Bruxelles is the place to go. Oh, the Atomium also! What the Eiffel Tower is to Paris, the Atomium is to Brussels and there’s a nice restaurant on the top. It’s normally hard to get a booking, but we can help our guests with that.

For more of an authentic Brussels brasserie, you have a few options. Comme chez Soi, La Villa Lorraine and Le Chalet de la Forêt. It’s places like these that the team and I frequent most for the Prix Fixes menu or the lunch specials, perhaps with a beer.

Best restaurants for a special occasion

Entropy is also pretty spectacular, I was just there with my colleague Marc the other day. It's a vegetarian restaurant with a focus on sustainability and a holistic approach to each ingredient. It opened recently and, tied with Lily’s, is probably the de facto “place to be” in Brussels. Lily’s is a really fun restaurant near La Cambre Abbey with a terrace and club that focuses on sharing plates of world cuisine.

Where can I try classic Belgian delicacies?

You have to start with waffles! There are two different types of Belgian waffle, the square-shaped ones, and gaufre de Liège – with caramelised sugar. They’re always in competition. Gaufre de Liège is my favourite. Maison Dandoy is the home of the Belgian waffle – it has a few sites around Brussels including, luckily for me, one just opposite Hotel Amigo. It’s a great place to go after breakfast if you’re still peckish.

The next one is, of course, Belgian chocolate. At Hotel Amigo we do two different chocolate experiences. The first one is a chocolate workshop, where you work with a master chocolatier to create your custom chocolate creations. The second one is a walking tour of the city. You visit all the historical locations and make some stops along the way to taste classic Belgian chocolate and Belgian blonde beer.

Finally, we come to Belgian fries – the best in the world bar none! The best Belgian fries are served in the bar at the Hotel Amigo, supplied by Patrick De Corte. Believe me when I say that I have had a lot of fries in a lot of places and none beats the ones we sell. That’s a promise! If I had to recommend one more place it would probably be Les Dames Tartine. The fries they sell with their moules-frites are probably a close second to ours.

What do you like to do in Brussels on your day off?

I love going to the market with my mother to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. My mother used to work at the Hotel Amigo as a breakfast chef, so she’s always keen to hear the latest goings on. Then I might go shopping with my two daughters and my wife around the Quartier Marais-Jacqmain. I also love football, so I try to watch the Red Devils whenever they are playing at home.
