Gerhard Richter, 100 works for Berlin
In March 2021, Berlin pulled off an incredible coup: Gerhard Richter, arguably Germany's most significant living painter, bestowed the National Gallery with 100 of his art pieces as enduring loans. Until the Museum of the 20th Century is ready to open its doors, these works have found a home in the newly renovated New National Gallery. One standout piece is "Birkenau", a late work that encapsulates Richter's extensive engagement with the Holocaust. This series of four large-scale, abstract paintings draws inspiration from haunting photographs taken at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The exhibition also includes other pivotal works from Richter's distinguished career, such as "Occupied House" and "4,900 Colours".
