History
Over the centuries, Torre Maizza has been a garrison in the defence line that spanned across the Puglia region, a 16th-century fortified watchtower against raids from Ottoman and Saracen Turks, as well as a place for pilgrims to take refuge during invasions. It has been a symbol of protection and safe haven for many years, slowly evolving into a working farm as the generations passed.
The olive grove that’s lovingly tended on the estate has trees thought to be over a thousand years old. The Torre Maizza grove is still harvested and pressed today to make olive oil—one of Puglia’s globally renowned exports.
The history of Torre Maizza lives on. Where once pilgrims were welcomed, now guests are treated to the superlative service of Rocco Forte Hotels. The old olive mill is the new world-class spa. The renovated 16th century masseria still retains the mezzanine area where local cheese and salami was made.
Purchased in 2018, Torre Maizza is now part of the Rocco Forte Hotels family. We are proud to be part of the history of this extraordinary estate, which has welcomed, housed, fed and protected people over hundreds of years. Past, present, and future, Torre Maizza has an exciting story to tell.
