My Favourites:
A taste of history
Munich's gourmet restaurants are as colourful as its districts. One that has staked its place in the history books is Tantris Maison Culinaire, Munich’s oldest Michelin-star restaurant where Chef Benjamin Chmura presents a sublime six or eight-course tasting menu of French Haute cuisine.
Another historic gem is Osteria Italiana, the oldest Italian restaurant in Germany that opened its doors as Osteria Bavaria in 1890. It’s an incredible spot for Italian cooking with a unique atmosphere and Mediterranean charm – and an impressive wine list with over 350 options – that makes it a must-visit.
For those attending a performance at the Bavarian State Opera, I would recommend Spatenhaus at the Opera, a great restaurant just across the square. It’s a restaurant of two halves - the ground floor has traditional Bavarian fare, but upstairs is a more refined, elegant establishment with a fine dining menu.
Personal favourites
I love HOIZ Neo-Brasserie, it’s a French bistro mixed with Bavarian style, just around the corner of the hotel - it has an amazing wine list, the best beef tartar and I really enjoy the casual atmosphere.
I've just been to a new restaurant called Mas-Tava, it’s in an inner courtyard at the heart of the old town with a beautiful terrace. They specialised in the freshest fish and their wine list is simply stunning with over 500 wines on it. They serve my absolute favourite Champagne called Pierre Péters and it's really hard to get – I had a turbot served with mussels beurre blanc which was amazing.
I recently went to Little London Bar & Grill, a top Munich steakhouse, and was really impressed. Our whole concierge team went together and we had the private dining room upstairs which was amazing, with a dedicated whiskey bar and impeccable service. The 928-degree Montague grill cooked our steaks to perfection, while the extensive wine list perfectly complemented the meal. Unforgettable.
For something different
The Viktualienmarkt, in the heart of Munich’s historic city centre, is a paradise for foodies. Since opening in the early 1800s as a farmer's market, it has grown into a sprawling expanse of 100 stalls selling everything from typical Bavarian goods to more global fare. Head to Thoma Fromages et Vins for amazing cheese and wine or Honighäusl which sells many different types of honey. Another favourite is Verrückte Eismacher (crazy ice-cream maker) which serves exceptional ice-cream creations in the warmer months.
Another Munich institution is Dallmayr which, since opening as a humble spice shop in around 1700, has grown into the largest delicatessen in Europe and is an icon of the city’s food scene. It serves everything – from their world-famous coffee, to an array of chocolate - much of which is made on-site, to gorgeous cakes baked fresh every day. Just upstairs from the deli is Alois, their 28-seat fine-dining restaurant which holds two Michelin stars under the leadership of Executive Chef Rosina Ostler. An incredible tasting menu in an intimate setting.
