Unmissable Sicily by Angela Cammalleri

With a personality as sunny as Sicily’s coastline, and a deep love for the island she’s called home since the age of ten, Angela Cammalleri takes great joy in sharing its beauty. For the past seven years at Verdura Resort, she has immersed guests in the authentic Sicilian experience, guiding them to the lesser-known treasures of the island.

“We love to call it relational tourism because it’s creating relations between people with different traditions, cultures and languages.”

Angela's top five:

A glimpse of true Sicily

For those looking to experience an authentic side of Sicily, I always recommend Our U Canuscituri - “the all-knowing” experience. We collaborate with local insiders to bring guests into the small villages surrounding the resort, where they can visit artisan workshops, make fresh ricotta, and olive oil, or spend time with shepherds. Guests can even help prepare a meal in a Sicilian family’s kitchen. It’s especially wonderful for families, as the hosts love to engage children in activities like rolling out pasta or painting ceramics.

Indulge into the beauty of Valley of the Temples

Echos of the past

For those seeking to explore Sicily’s rich heritage, the Valley of the Temples is a must. Walking through this UNESCO World Heritage site is like stepping back in time, and it’s easy to imagine what life was like centuries ago. It’s even more enchanting at sunset - there’s something very special about the way the light dances across the columns, making them look almost alive.

Explore Sciacca's history and treasures with Verdura Resort

A stroll through Sciacca

Just 20 minutes from the resort, the fisherman’s village of Sciacca is one of my favourite recommendations. Known for its beautiful ceramics and coral jewellery, it’s the perfect place to experience traditional craftsmanship.Guests can wander through the historic centre, watching artisans create pottery and intricate jewellery pieces from scratch. For those seeking a more hands-on experience, we can also arrange private classes.

Travel to the Enchanted Castle in Sicily with Rocco Forte Hotels

Faces in stone

Halfway between the resort and Sciacca lies the Enchanted Castle. Despite its name, it’s not actually a castle, but an open-air museum discovered only in the 1980s. The artist behind it, Filippo Bentivegna, was known to be a bit eccentric, preferring solitude over social life. He purchased a plot of land and began carving faces into the rocks. When he ran out of stone, he moved to wood, and when that was gone, he dug caves to find more rocks. Legend goes that the thousands of sculptures represent the humanity that he met in real life.

Between See and Sky

For the best views, I always recommend a visit to Caltabellotta, a lovely village near the resort. There are only about 3,000 citizens, no more than that, and it's 950 metres above sea level. It was one of the first Greek colonies in this part of the island. And from here, on clear and sunny days, you can actually see the Tunisia coast. I love to encourage people to reach this spot, where the Mother Church rises, and photograph it with their mind, because you can see the entire coast as well as the resort. It just takes your breath away.
