The Baroque Jewel

Palermo’s colourful neighbourhood, Capo, is home to one of the city’s most fascinating cultural sites; the Baroque Church of the Immaculate. Also known as Casa Professa, the striking building is still used by the Society of Jesus and is one of Palermo’s most sensational churches. Originally constructed between 1564 and 1588 by the Jesuits, the church underwent an impressive transformation in 1633 after suffering major bomb damage. As a result, its unusual architecture reflects an amalgamation of simplistic 16th-century design and the flamboyance of 17th-century Baroque influences. The church’s interiors are decorated with intricate marble inlays, ornate carvings and Pietro Novelli’s exquisite frescos. The chapel of the Jesuit Baroque is considered as one of the most beautiful chapels in Italy and the surrounding Capo Market tops off a wonderful visit to this vibrant part of the city.
